剪纸 the art of Jianzhi: do you want some "happy flowers"?

domenica 26 febbraio 2012

the art of Jianzhi (剪纸) is the first type of papercutting design, since paper was invented by Cai Lun in the Eastern Han Dynasty in China. The art form later spread to other parts of the world with different regions adopting their own cultural styles. Because the cut outs are also used to decorate doors and windows, they are sometimes referred to "chuāng huā" (窗花), meaning Window Flower.

The simple example in the photo was made by me, in Luoyang city. Me with some friends have spent our 1th of may three days of holidays visiting Xian and Luoyang city. Our guide took us to this little hutong where was some women who were masters in this strange art. The scissors were the best part: so tiny to cut. The masters after welcomed us in their school and watch to our "they're clearly Loawais" style , started to give us a red sheets in A4 dimension: it was rice paper. We have folded up the sheets to have a triangle and we draw  some lines (with the advices of our masters) and a part with little theets. The most difficulty is to use these scissors and cut with some accuracy the lines. In the end we open up the folded triangle and a big red flowers appear.
In our culture this art seems some kids play or some carnival/christmas Art Attack, but for Chinese people it is a decoration who provides some fortune and good future to the house (with flowers on the windows). During the Spring Festival chinese were used to make paper cutting decorations that will be there for all the lunar year. This art is also known as the of "happy flowers".
